Kindergarten Mathematics Third Nine Weeks

Dear Parents:
The objectives listed below will be used to lead your child to mastery of the concepts covered in the 3rd Nine Weeks Unit of study.
Number and Operations
· Count objects to 30
· Models for numbers words 1 - 10
· Write numerals 1 – 20 to label sets
· Ordinal numbers 1st – 10th
· Compare sets as equal to, more than, or less than
· Estimate using 5 and 10 as benchmark
Geometry
Recognize, compare and name 6 shapes (triangle, quadrilaterals- rectangle, square, circle, sphere, and cube)
Money
Data
· Pose information questions
· Collect and organize data
· Record using picture graphs and discuss
Measurement
· Compare and order by length, capacity, height, and weight
· Know the days of the week, the months, of the year, and the four seasons
· Understand time as it relates to a daily schedule
· Order daily events
· Tell the time when daily events occur, such as morning, afternoon, and evening
· Know the name of the day of the week when weekly events occur in class

- Observe and represent concrete objects in the environment using shapes
- Compare shapes and identify similarities and differences
- Identifies, creates, extends patterns
Money
- Identify coins by name and value (penny, nickel, dime, quarter)
- Count out pennies to buy items up to 20 cents
- Make fair trades of pennies and nickels or pennies and dimes

Here are some suggestions as to what you can do at home to help your child:
- Pour the change from your purse or empty your pockets and have your child identify the coins and tell you how much each coin is worth.
- Ask your child to show you how many pennies it takes to make a nickel.
- Ask your child to show you how many pennies it takes to make a dime.
